My friend posted a picture on Facebook of a t-shirt she had just purchased.

Canada: 150 years on stolen land

When I read these words my heart ached with the truth behind those words.

I celebrated Centennial year in 1967 and felt such pride in being Canadian. Towns and cities across the country had projects and events to mark this great moment. So many felt that we were breaking the bonds of being a colony and the ties we had historically to the Queen and Britain. We were going to carve a future for all.

Now I recognize the truth and implications of the slogan on my friend’s shirt. I wasn’t seeing things with such clarity in 1967. Finally I see the way that control of the land and resources has shaped Canada and continues to do so. That control has been and is done on the backs of some not all… the backs of the First Nations, Inuit and Metis.

I don’t feel that I can honestly celebrate this year. However I see an opportunity to find my voice to call for action toward making things right.

Mr. Prime Minister you promised a new relationship with the First People of Canada. I voted for you in part because of that promise. You talk a good story. Now I ask that you honour the promises that you made in the spirit in which you made them. A new equitable relationship with First Nations, Metis and Inuit is foundational to a future of a Canada that I can celebrate wholeheartedly.

Talk soon.
