Nicholas Wilton of Art2Life has a wonderful Wednesday noon hour PDT event called the Kitchen Table Art Project. The theme for the last week of April is REUSE.

May I just say WOW – now you are talking my language.

I immediately thought of the Matchbook Art that I have been making to spread enthusiasm and engagement with reimagining our relationship with Mother Earth and what we can do to stop contributing to the climate crisis.

I started making these because I wanted to find a way to be an environmental warrior  and the truth is that I cry during rallies so that is not very productive. Imagine me carrying a placard and weeping down the middle of the road. Painting is something I actually can do and it is fun to carry a bag full of these to pull out for folks to make a selection of a message that inspires them to action, reminds them of something they already do or for them to pass on to others as a prompt for change. Often people want to take a few to pass on . I say YEAH and feel like Banksy.

I used offcuts from posters that we had made for a community event and the backs of old paintings for the art so REUSE was in play from the very beginning. It was really fun to make these in big batches and even customize the images and slogans for shops around town. Our health food store “The Country Cupboard” had art that celebrated their own green efforts for customers to claim.

People don’t have to start a conversation about the environment with Matchbook Art, they may have other things that they are passionate about even if it is simply wanting to share their creativity with others.

Those of us in the Creative Visionary Program have an opportunity to make these Matchbook gems using the paint left on our palette paper either wet or after drying as collage.

On a personal note, my desire board has a image of my actsofart150.com website showing the Matchbook Art Project and the word “engagement” on it. If other artists picked up this idea (which isn’t mine but borrowed from a spark I tucked away from Instagram or Pinterest) and we collectively moved society forward by engaging folks in a green or creative way that would be a dream come true.
