Our guests over the July 1st long weekend were helping me brainstorm slogans for the backs of the MatchBooks.

We had quite a good discussion of what kind of messaging works best.

While I had no problem saying direct commands such as “Kick the CO2 Habit”, one of my guests had a strong preference for humorous messages and positive un-bossy messages.

There are times when my sense of urgency is in full on RED ALERT and I want to write messages that convey that level of panic. This particular batch was intended to be offered to folks at our annual cottager’s association meeting.

Later on, as I looked around the room I was glad that I listened to the advice of our guests.

Almost every person took a Matchbook. I’m sure they would have been rejected if I had only written the messages that live on the tip of my tongue… those urgent hard hitting demands.

The folks had not come to listen to anything on climate change. They were concerned about the potholes in front of their cottage and whether the new bridge would be built.

As the meeting progressed, the way our local councillor addressed the cottagers concerns repeatedly included environmental issues. I came away thinking that the milder more “door-opening” messages might have done a great job reinforcing the Green messaging that happened naturally throughout the meeting.

I keep feeling that a tipping point is coming that will galvanize business, politics and individual action in one direction. Until then ….
